AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s and women’s track and field teams notched a total of four all-time top-10 performances on the first day of the Iowa State Classic. The Cyclones notched top-10 showings in the men’s and women’s distance medley relay, the men’s weight throw and the women’s 5,000-meter run.

In the night’s most anticipated event, the 5,000-meter run, Wisconsin’s Reed Connor stole the show. For the majority of the race, Connor battled with Shadrack Kipchirchir (unattached), Patrick Tiernan (Villanova) and Matt McElroy (Northern Arizona). Connor used a strong kick over the final 200 meters to overtake Tiernan and take the victory in a Harry Hoak Track and ISU Classic meet record 13:37.42. The previous mark of 13:38.23 was held by four-time NCAA Champion and 2000 Olympian Adam Goucher. Goucher won collegiate titles in both track and cross country while competing for Colorado.

Senior sprinter Jessica Nichols had a strong outing today, notching a personal best in the 60-meter dash and nearly setting another in the 200m. Nichols posted a mark of 7.79 seconds in the 60m, breaking her previous best of 7.81 seconds. In the 200m, the Perry, Iowa, native equaled her best mark, crossing the line in 24.14 seconds.

The Duke women’s distance medley relay squad set an ISU Classic meet and Harry Hoak track record, breaking the tape in 11:06.87. The Cyclone women finished third in today’s race, crossing the line in 11:12.86. The squad (Perez Rotich, Kendra White, Ejiro Okoro and Bethanie Brown) notched the second-fastest time in program history, less than a second off of last weekend’s record-setting 11:11.93.

The Iowa State men’s DMR squad was equally, if not more impressive in their race. The team (Joe Gioielli, Derek Jones, Edward Kemboi and Alex Dillenbeck) crossed the line in 9:38.49, which is good for No. 2 on Iowa State’s all-time list.

Samantha Bluske ran a personal-best 16:35.17 in the women’s 5,000-meter run, breaking her previous mark of 16:37.98. The Chaseburg, Wis., native is now fifth on the Cyclones’ top-10 all-time list.

In the men’s weight throw, Henry Kelley hurled a personal-best 58 feet, 10.25 inches en route to a fifth-place finish. Kelley bested his previous mark by more than 6 inches and moves him up to eighth on ISU’s top-10 list. Long jumper Mark Johnson picked up a PR in the long jump, placing fourth with a mark of 23 feet, 4 inches.

Jacob Hoogensen also notched a personal best in today’s action. The Cyclone sophomore ran the 600-yard run in 1:12.53.
