Hillman, Men's DMR To Highlight Weekend For ISU
AMES, Iowa – Members of the Iowa State track and field teams will be competing at a trio of track meets this weekend, as student-athletes travel to the UNI-Dome Open, Notre Dame’s Alex Wilson Invitational and the USA Indoor Championships. The Cyclones will be competing each day this weekend (Friday: UNI-Dome, Saturday: Alex Wilson, Sunday: USA Championships).
USA Indoor Championships
Junior thrower Christina Hillman will be making the trip to Albuquerque, N.M. this weekend to compete against the nation’s elite in the shot put. The Dover, Del., native is a two-time All-American and is the NCAA leader in the event with a top mark this season of 57’5.5” and holds the fifth-best throw in the nation, professional or collegiate. Hillman has won each competition in which she has competed this season.
Hillman holds a personal best of 58’0.5” (2013 NCAA Indoor Championships) in the shot put and is scheduled to compete Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2:20 CT. See the ‘Related Links’ section to the right for a complete schedule of the national championships.
Alex Wilson Invitational
The men’s distance medley relay will be the focus of Iowa State action in South Bend, Ind. as the team as the team has its sights set on a program milestone. The squad of Joe Gioielli, Derek Jones, Edward Kemboi and Alex Dillenbeck posted the second-fastest mark in program history at last week’s ISU Classic, crossing the line in 9:38.49, which is currently good for 15th nationally. The Cyclones enter the meet looking to break the program record of 9:35.96 (Joseph Chepsiror, Delon Gomes, Dmitry Drozdov and Steve Green), which would rank at least eighth in the nation and qualify the squad for the NCAA Championships.
Jones (400m), Gioielli (800m) and Brian Llamas (Mile) will also be competing as individuals this weekend. Cyclone competition at Notre Dame is scheduled to begin at 11:05 a.m. CT with the men’s DMR.
A group of athletes will be traveling to Cedar Falls to compete in the UNI-Dome Open. The meet has become a staple in the Cyclones’ indoor schedule over the years. The Dome Open is a one-day meet and will feature athletes from UNI, Luther, Mount Mercy College and Clarke University, as well as competitor from several running clubs. Field events are slated to begin at 1:00p.m. CT, with running events kicking off at 3:00 p.m.
