Cyclone Men Announce 2014 Recruiting Class

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State director of track and field and cross country Martin Smith announced the incoming 2014 class of men’s runners this morning. The class includes three athletes who finished in the top-20 at the 2014 Footlocker National cross country championships in Josef Andrews (10th), Toby Hardwick (17th) and Dan Curts (19th), as well as the nation's second-fastest returning miler in Josh Evans.

Smith was very proud of what his staff accomplished this recruiting season.

“Coach Sudbury and I are extremely pleased how this first recruiting class materialized,” Smith said. “This is a young group of athletes that gives us a strong and exciting foundation to build on in the future. Their national prominence is very exciting and they will be fun to watch, given their potential.”

2014 Track and Field/Cross Country Recruiting Class

The Recruits are…
Josef Andrews. Andrews is a product of Telstar Regional High School and is a four-time state champion. The Bethel, Maine, native finished fifth at Footlocker’s Northeast Regional in 15:37 and was named the 2014 Gatorade Runner of the Year in the state of Maine. He holds personal bests of 4:19.55 (1600m), 9:16.74 (3200m) and 14:57.76 (5000m). Andrews recently clocked a time of 8:30.20 in the 3,000-meter run at the New England Open.

Dan Curts. One of Andrews’ top instate competitors, Curts was also named Gatorade’s Runner of the Year in 2013. The Ellsworth, Maine, native finished just behind Andrews at the Footlocker regional, placing sixth in 15:39. Curts attends Ellsworth High School and holds personal bests of 4:14.02 in the 1600m and 9:15.90 in the 3200m. Curts just recently ran the nation’s fastest time in the 3,000m, clocking in at 8:23.85. The time is the fastest ever run in New England high school indoor history.

Toby Hardwick. One of the top cross country runners in the Midwest, Hardwick finished runner-up at the Ohio State cross country championships. The Newark, Ohio, native finished fourth in the region at the Footlocker championships with a time of 15:11. Hardwick comes to Iowa State with top marks of 1:58.82 (800m), 4:20.23 (1600m) and 9:30.20 (3200m).

Josh Evans. Evans is one of the most coveted milers in the country and chose Iowa State over other national power programs. The Linn Mar, Iowa, native is a three-time state champion (mile, distance medley, cross country) and the Drake Relays record holder in the mile. Evans set the mark last season at 4:10.86 in a performance that earned most outstanding performer accolades. He was named the 2013 Gatorade Runner of the Year in Iowa and finished eighth at the Nike Heartland Regional and notched a 16th place finish at the Footlocker Midwest Regional. Evans has top times of 4:08.80 (1600m) and 9:11.49 (3200m).

Nathan Rodriguez. Rodriguez is the reigning Arizona high school cross country state champion after breaking the tape in 15:08. The performance earned him the title of Arizona’s Gatorade Runner of the Year. Also a very strong 800-meter runner, the Tempe, Ariz., native holds a personal best of 1:53.11 in the event. The Corona Del Sol High School product holds personal bests of 4:12.87 (1600m) and 9:10.61 (3200m).

Nolan McKenna. One of the top distance runners in Illinois, McKenna comes to Iowa State fresh off a twelfth-place finish at the Illinois high school Cross Country state championships. Last Year he finished fifth at the Illinois Track and Field State championships in the 3200m event. McKenna attends Wheaton-Warrenville South High School and has marks of 4:17.93 in the 1600m and 9:03.96 in the 3200m.

Christopher Webb. Webb is one of three transfers on the list and one of two from Paradise Valley Community College. Webb placed third at this year’s Arizona Community College Athletic Conference cross country championships and will make an immediate impact for the Cyclones. He comes to Ames with personal bests of 3:54.74 (1500m), 4:08.92 (Mile), 8:25.12 (3000m) and 24:42.70 (8000m).

Brandon Wheat. A teammate of Webb’s at Paradise Valley CC, Wheat specializes in the middle-distance events. The former Puma notched a runner-up finish at the NJCAA national indoor championships in the 1000m and holds a personal best of 2:29.61 in the event. Wheat also finished second at the Arizona State Championships in the 800m run, where he holds a top time of 1:51.63.

Brian Biekert. Biekert comes to Iowa State from Central Connecticut State and will attend graduate school. The Groton, Conn., native is a three-time Northeast Conference Champion for the Blue Demons and was an NCAA qualifier in the steeplechase. Biekert holds personal bests of 3:48.68 (1500m), 4:06.05 (mile) and 8:59.11 (3000m-stp).

Elijah Young. Young is an in-state product from Des Moines and attends Lincoln High School. Young is a strong hurdler with marks of 14.64 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and 53.81 in the 400-meter hurdles. The Railsplitter also holds a time of 51.67 in the 400m-dash.
