AMES, Iowa – Iowa State middle-distance standout Edward Kemboi received votes in the pre-NCAA Indoor Championships watch list for the prestigious Bowerman Trophy. The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association made the announcement yesterday. The award is presented by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate athletes in the nation.

Kemboi has burst into the national spotlight this season, winning four of five events and picking up two Big 12 titles. As the level of competition has elevated, so has Kemboi’s performance, racking up eight victories over athletes ranked in the nation’s top-15 and finishing no lower than third in a race this indoor season. The Eldoret, Kenya, native holds the nation’s top seed in the event heading into the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Iowa State assistant coach Jeremy Sudbury has been very pleased with what he has seen from Kemboi this season.

“Ed’s 2014 indoor season has gone very well so far,” Sudbury said. “He has set a personal record in his signature event and added two Big 12 titles in an extremely difficult double. Ed has very big goals and high hopes, and he’s going to continue to progress as the year goes on.”

The Eldoret, Kenya, native’s marquee performance came on his home track at this year’s Iowa State Classic. The event featured the nation’s top competition, including five runners currently ranked in the nation’s top-12 in Sean Obinwa (Florida), Billy Ledder (Georgetown), Andres Arroyo (Florida), Samuel Ellison (Villanova) and Ryan Schnulle (Florida). Kemboi dominated the field in an elite performance, notching the seventh-fastest time in the world at an Iowa State indoor record 1:45.98 and crossing the line nearly two seconds ahead of the next finisher.

The Cyclone junior made Big 12 history last weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, becoming the first athlete in conference history to win both the 1,000-meter run and 800-meter run in the same conference meet. The time elapsed from when he won the 1,000m to breaking the tape in the 800m was just 19 minutes, 28.17 seconds.

The watch list will be updated several times this season, and Kemboi will attempt to raise his stock throughout the year. The Bowerman Trophy is awarded annually at USTFCCCA coaches convention.

Kemboi will return to the track Mar. 14-15 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Alburquerque, N.M., looking to capture his first NCAA title.
