DES MOINES, Iowa – Former Iowa State track and field great John Nuttall received another honor for his illustrious career Friday evening, as Nuttall was inducted into the Drake Relays Hall of Fame.

Nuttall is one of the most decorated athletes in Iowa State track and cross country history. A six-time All-American and 1989 NCAA cross country champion, Nuttall played a major role in Iowa State’s success on the track and on the course in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Nuttall led the Cyclones to the NCAA cross country title in 1989 with his first-place overall finish and lifted his teams to back-to-back Big 8 indoor titles in 1990 and 1991, as well as the conference outdoor title in ‘91.

In his time as a Cyclone, Nuttall amassed five Drake Relays titles. The British-born athlete notched three titles as a part of the 4x1600m relay team (1989-91) and two more in the 1,500-meter run (1990-91). His time of 3:41.74 in the 1,500m is still the fastest run by a university-division athlete at the Drake Relays.

On the national stage, Nuttall notched a total of four runner-up finishes at the NCAA track and field championships, two in both the 3,000m and 5,000m.

His success reached across the pond, as he was regarded as one of the top cross country runners in all of Europe. Nutall picked up numerous top-5 finishes on the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) cross country circuit, as well as a 14th place finish in the 5,000m at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in 1993.

Nuttall was inducted into the ISU Letterwinners’ Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, along with his coach and Iowa State track and field icon Bill Bergan. Nuttall is currently coaching overseas for the Qatar Olympic team.
