AMES, Iowa- A dominant Iowa State offensive attack was too much for the Western Illinois Leathernecks as the Cyclones grabbed a 2-0 victory in the home opener at the Cyclone Sports Complex and advanced to 3-0 on the season.

A total of 901 fans packed the Cyclone Sports Complex, which ranks top five all-time in Iowa State soccer attendance history.

Iowa State controlled most of the game in their first shutout of the season holding the Leathernecks to just seven shots. The Cyclones last shutout was on Oct. 14th against Drake last season. Iowa State took 26 shots with10 shots on goal. The Cyclone defense was particularly impressive in the first half, as it was not until early in the second half that Iowa State allowed Western Illinois to take a shot.

“Heading into this game knowing the formation that they have played so far this season, we knew that they were going to only use three defenders,” head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “We kept the ball, moved the ball and capitalized.  I though we did a good job of looking to exploit and not just keep possession. That is why I think we scored that first goal so quickly.”

To start off the match, Erin Green scored an early goal in the 13th minute on an assist from Jennifer Dominguez. The goal is the second of the season for the senior.

Senior Jennifer Dominguez added the second goal for the Cyclones in the 67th minute on some nice passing from Margaret Powers and Emily Goldstein.  The goal is the second of the season for the All-Big 12 star.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Jobe came up with 3 saves in the game bringing her early season total to eight. The game marks Jobe’s 15th career shutout.

“The thing that is really impressive about this group is that this is their third game in five days,” Dillinger said. “To come out and play with the energy and momentum that we had in that third game and to still have enough legs impressed me. The mental aspect of when to attack and when to pass was spot on tonight.”

The Cyclones will take on Minnesota Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex at 1 p.m. Cyclones.tv will broadcast the event live. Results will be available on Cyclones.com at the conclusion of the game.
