MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- Iowa State junior Ksenia Pronina went 2-0 to highlight the Cyclones' first day at the Gopher Invite.

After taking the top flight title at last weekend’s Drake Invitational, Pronina continued her undefeated singles record Friday night in Minneapolis. In the first round, Pronina took down Wisconsin’s Diana Tokar, 6-1, 6-4 before defeating Minnesota’s Natallia Pintusava, 6-2, 6-0. Friday’s wins improve the Iowa State standout’s singles record to an impressive 5-0. Pronina is set to take on Eastern Michigan’s Diana Davitaia in the semifinals of her flight on Saturday at noon.

The tournament kicked off Friday morning with Iowa State getting a chance at some much-desired doubles wins. The Cyclones went 2-2 in doubles with Pronina and sophomore Ana Gasparovic defeating Melanie Yates and Katie Edwards of Gonzaga, 8-5. Senior Emma Waites paired up with junior Caroline Andersen to take down South Dakota’s duo of Marina Arriola and Ana Jelena Vujosevic, 8-3.

This weekend’s tournament was the first chance for Iowa State’s freshmen players to get a taste of collegiate tennis action. Freshmen Samantha Budai and Lydia Green also finished Friday’s singles play undefeated. Budai defeated South Dakota’s Dragana Brankovic, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round before gaining a win over Minnesota’s Julia Courter, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0. Green took down another South Dakota opponent, Ana Vujosevic, in the first round with a score of 6-1, 6-2 and ended the evening with a win over South Dakota State’s Beatriz Souza, 6-4, 7-6.

Iowa State’s returning members also saw success on Friday. Gasparovic defeated North Dakota’s Steph Petsis, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0, in her flight’s consolation round. Andersen defeated South Dakota State’s Tacy Haws Lay, 6-3, 7-5, in first round play before falling to UNI foe, Kylie Haviland, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round.
