Cyclone Notebook
- Iowa State is playing its 107th season and the fourth under head coach Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg has led the Cyclones to the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons and is seeking to become the second coach in school history to earn three berths in a row (Tim Floyd, 1995-97). Hoiberg is 62-39 overall at Iowa State.
- The Cyclones played at Creighton on Oct. 27 in a closed scrimmage. It was the fifth time that ISU has used one of its exhibition dates to play a closed scrimmage: Creighton (2008), Bradley (2010), Nebraska (2011, 2012).
- Iowa State is 45-4 in exhibition games dating back to the 1983-84 season. The last Cyclone loss in an exhibition was in 2005-06 when they fell to EA Sports, 64-57.
- Augustana head coach Tom Billeter was an assistant coach at Texas A&M from 1998-2003 under Melvin Watkins. The Cyclones were 4-2 against A&M during his tenure in College Station.
- Iowa State was picked fourth in the Big 12 coaches preseason poll, its highest preseason pick since 2000-01. Senior Melvin Ejim was selected to the preseason All-Big 12 team.
- ISU returns just six players from last year’s team that finished 23-12. ISU will be led by Ejim (11.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg) and sophomore Georges Niang (12.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg), who are the lone returning starters for the Cyclones.
- The Cyclones welcome eight newcomers, a list that includes two transfers that won’t play this season, two freshmen and four junior college players.
- The top addition in the offseason was DeAndre Kane, a 6-4 guard who transferred from Marshall in May. Kane, who is eligible immediately and on the Bob Cousy Award watch list, averaged 15.1 points per game and 7.0 assists (11th nationally) last season. He has scored 1,496 career points.
- Iowa State also adds a pair of top-100 freshmen in Monté Morris and Matt Thomas. Morris was ranked No. 89 in the rankings and was a Detroit Free Press’ Dream Team selection in 2012 and 2013. Thomas was ranked as high as No. 51 by ESPN after averaging 28.3 points per game at Onalaska High School.
