Cyclones Take Down SEMO, UNO in Home Opener
AMES, Iowa- Iowa State tennis (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) opened the home season today at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center’s indoor courts with wins over Southeast Missouri State, 6-0, and Omaha, 7-0.
The Cyclones took the early doubles point against the Redhawks, with junior Meghan Cassens teaming up with sophomore Ana Gasparovic at the No. 2 spot to take down Heather Robinson and Valeriia Nagovitcina, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Ksenia Pronina and freshman Samantha Budai defeated Valeriia Kashina and Ekaterina Donetskova at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-2. No. 3 doubles went unfinished, ending with a score of 5-0 for junior Caroline Andersen and freshman Lydia Green over Annisa Warasanti and Melissa Martin.
Iowa State dominated in singles over Southeast Missouri State, taking wins in all five matches played. At No. 1 singles, Pronina defeated Kashina, 6-0, 6-2. Budai played at the No. 2 spot, taking down Nagovitcina, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Cassens took down Donetskova, 6-2, 6-2. Gasparovic took on Robinson, finishing with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot. In the No. 5 spot, Green took the win over Warasanti , 6-1, 6-3.
“We came out both matches with lots of energy,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “It really helped getting the doubles point early, and then singles went well. I was pleased with it.”
The Cyclones again took the doubles point against Omaha, highlighted by a 6-0 shutout from Cassens and Gasparovic at the No. 2 spot over the Mavericks’ Hylan Miller and Kenzie Hill. At No.1 doubles, Pronina and Budai took down Alex Tran and Jacqueline Baude, 6-1. No. 3 doubles went unfinished with Green and Andersen ahead of Tiffany Hottman and Molly Matricardi, 4-3.
Again the Cyclones took over in singles against the Mavericks, with Pronina taking the win, 6-1, 6-2, over Tran at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Budai kept the action rolling with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Matricardi. Cassens took down Miller at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Gasparovic took the No. 4 singles win, 6-1, 6-1, over Hill. Green claimed the victory at the No. 5 spot over Lindsay Weideman, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 6 singles, senior Emma Waites defeated Tiffany Hottman, 6-2, 6-0, to claim the final point for the Cyclones.
“Both teams really made us play,” Espinosa said. “I don’t think that the score reflects what really happened on the courts.”
The Cyclones will be back at it with another home meet Friday, Jan. 31, against North Dakota.
