Kansas Downs Cyclones 4-1 At Big 12 Championships

Fort Worth, Texas- The Iowa State tennis team lost to Kansas, 4-1, on Thursday in Fort Worth in the first round of the Big 12 Championships. The Cyclones finish the season 9-14 overall. Kansas improves to 12-11 overall and advances to face top-seeded Baylor Friday.

Kansas took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. At No. 1, junior Ksenia Pronina and freshman Samantha Budai were narrowly edged out by Dylan Windom and Paulina Los, 8-7.

Pronina took the first singles point over Windom at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-2.

A last-minute line-up change brought senior Emma Waites up to No. 4 singles to take on Paulina Los. Los won the match, 6-3, 6-1. Junior Meghan Cassens struggled against Belen Luduena, losing 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 slot. Freshman Talisa Merchiers was defeated at No. 5 slot, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the match for Kansas.

6. Caroline Henderson (KU) vs. Lydia Green (ISU) 7-6 (8-6), unfinished

Doubles competition
1. Dylan Windom/Paulina Los (KU) def. Sami Budai/Ksenia Pronina (ISU) 8-7 (7-4)
2. Maria Cardona/Belen Luduena (KU) def. Meghan Cassens/Ana Gasparovic (ISU) 7-4
3. Caroline Henderson/Nastya Trubich (KU) def. Lydia Green/Caroline Andersen (ISU) 8-4
