Cyclones Ink Top Recruit Bethanie Brown
AMES, Iowa – Bethanie Brown, considered by many to be the top distance runner in Maine, has signed her financial aid agreement to run for Iowa State, head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough announced today.
Brown originally committed to run at Connecticut under Grove-McDonough. However, Brown was granted release from the Huskies when the 2012 NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the year accepted the position with the Cyclones.
A native of Waterville, Maine, Brown was a nine-time high school outdoor state champion. She was a three-peat champion in the 1,600-meter run and 4x400-meter relay, also capturing back-to-back titles in the 3,200 meter-run as a junior and senior. Brown tacked on the 800-meter title in her senior campaign. Brown is also a seven-time indoor state champion and took home the individual title at the 2012 state cross country meet.
Nicknamed ‘Maine’s Mighty Miler’ by Running Times Magazine, Brown boasts personal best times of 4:50.39 in the 1,600-meter run, 10:13.90 in the 3,200-meter run and 2:15.44 in the 800-meter run (Indoor). She captured the ‘distance triple,’ winning all three events at the 2013 Maine High School State Championships.
Grove-McDonough is very excited to have Brown on the roster.
“Bethanie gives us an immediate contributor and some added depth on our roster,” Grove-McDonough said. “She will be someone who mixes it up with our top runners and works hard every day. She brings a lot of energy to the program and is very mature for a freshman. She’s someone who just wants to come in and work hard and that’s a great quality to have.”
