AMES, Iowa - Iowa State swimmer Imelda Wistey was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Team for District 6 on Thursday. The award recognizes distinguished student-athletes throughout the country for their scholastic and athletic accomplishments.

A senior from West Des Moines, Iowa, Wistey solidified her spot in Iowa State swimming history during the 2013-14 season, and managed to maintain a 3.96 grade point average as an English major at the same time.

Wistey broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.46), the school record in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.76) and Beyer Hall pool records in the 100 breaststroke (1.00.46) and 200 medley relay (1:41.40) all in one night in her final meeting against in-state rival, Iowa.

Throughout her senior season, Wistey racked up 24 first-place finishes, bringing her three-year total to 68 first place finishes in her swimming career at Iowa State. She concluded her career at Iowa State by becoming the first ISU swimmer to compete at the NCAA Champion since 2010, where she finished 34th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.12).

For the second consecutive year, she earned the Kerry O' Brien Award, which gives recognition to a student-athlete who demonstrates the personal commitment necessary to achieve improvement to a national championship level.

By being named to the All-District team, Wistey is in contention for Academic All-America honors. The voting period for the national ballot begins on May 20.
