AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State football team recently held a team meeting to wrap up summer workouts, and for one particular Cyclone, it was possibly the greatest team gathering he has ever been a part of.

Justin Coleman, a walk-on wide receiver from Beatrice, Neb., who transferred from Division II Nebraska-Omaha when it dropped its football program, was placed on scholarship for the 2013 season. An emotional Paul Rhoads made the announcement to Coleman at the team meeting.

The redshirt senior and his teammates were ecstatic when Rhoads relayed the news.

“I can even explain how I feel right now,” Coleman said. “I have been working really hard and I have been just trying to get on the field, so this is just icing on the cake.”

Coleman is entering his third season with the Cyclone football program after a pair of successful seasons at UNO (2009 & 2010) where he caught 48 passes for 570 yards. After the 2010 campaign, UNO decided to shut down its football program and Coleman needed a new home.

Coleman and his head coach at UNO, Pat Berhns, placed a call to Rhoads, who worked with Berhns at Utah State in the early 1990s. Rhoads offered Coleman a walk-on spot and the receiver accepted, joining the Cyclones in 2011.

Coleman redshirted in 2011 and played in 11 games in 2012, mostly on special teams. The 2013 season could be a different story, however. After a strong showing in spring practice, Coleman has darted up the depth chart and is in line to contribute significantly to ISU’s young receiving corps.

With a scholarship in hand, Coleman can be even more focused for his final season.
