Donor Profile: The McDonnells
AMES, Iowa- Steve McDonnell ('73 industrial administration) lives in Texas, but that doesn't stop him from seeing as many Iowa State athletic events as he can. The Clinton, Iowa native developed his love of Iowa State athletics during his time in Ames as a college student. He remembers going to basketball games at the Armory and watching Johnny Majors turn the Cyclone football fortunes around on the gridiron at Clyde Williams Field.
After a successful business career, McDonnell and his wife, Patty ('74 LAS), are retired and living in Colleyville, Texas. He makes it to Ames as much as he can, but living in Texas also provides the couple the opportunity to watch a number of road contests.
"I follow all of the Cyclone athletic teams and, living in Texas, I get the chance to see a number of road football, basketball and volleyball games," McDonnell said. "I enjoy being part of the passionate Cyclone fan base. I truly believe that with the leadership we have in the athletic program and the coaches we have in all sports that the future has never been brighter for Cyclone sports."
McDonnell retired in 2008 from Holly Corporation where he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for several years. Steve's retirement has allowed the McDonnells to be more active in philanthropic ventures with their alma mater. The McDonnells are members of the Cyclone Club, Clyde Williams Society, Cyclone Gridiron Club, ISU Alumni Association and the Order of the Knoll. Steve and Patty have also been supportive of the College of Business.
When Iowa State introduced CourtCYd seating at men's basketball games in 2006, the McDonnells jumped at the opportunity to sit down low. They have been CourtCYd seat holders since its inception and are looking forward to watching the Cyclone men's hoops team in action this season.
"We are really excited for men's basketball," McDonnell said. "We hope to get up there for many of the conference games."
This past year, the McDonnells were instrumental in getting the new Iowa State Football Training Center project off the ground. The couple provided a leadership gift in support of the facility, which is currently under construction and scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2012.
"We are excited to be able to recognize Patty and Steve McDonnell for their generous gift to the new Football Training Complex," Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard said. "Without their leadership gift, we would not have been able to start this important project. Although they live in Texas, they are avid Cyclone fans who enjoy following all the Cyclone athletics teams. They are truly great alums of Iowa State University."
