Margaret Telleen, an 84-year old resident of Gowrie, Iowa has been a part of the Cyclone Club for over 40 years. She first started attending Iowa State games in 1966 when her children were attending ISU. Since then she has fallen in love with the excitement of collegiate competition and continues her devotion to Cyclone athletics.

We sat down with Margaret for a few questions about her experiences throughout the years.

Q: So how did you get involved with the Cyclone Club?

A: "When my son started attending college in 1966 he gave my husband and I both season tickets. We got seats to the basketball and football games for my birthday and then for Christmas. Since then we decided to join the Cyclone Club, and I think our first donation was something like $500. After both of our kids graduated we then upped our giving level and now we are helping other kids go through college."

Q: When did you attend your first Cyclone event?

A: "It would have been a basketball game in 1966 in the old armory. All I remember is that we sat on the old bleachers and the band was right behind us. It was so loud and we sure made a lot of noise. I also remember back then seeing wrestling meets right after basketball games in the armory. Dan Gable and Chris Taylor were fun to watch wrestle at that time."

Q: What was your most memorable game that you attended for Iowa State?

A: "The Lafester Rhodes game (Rhodes scored a school-record 54 points in a 102-100 overtime ISU victory in Dec. 1987) against Iowa, when we beat them in Ames. He made an impression for the whole state of Iowa with those 54 points. We went to so many games. There are lots and lots of memories. It was always neat to see Johnny Orr come out to the playing of 'Here Johnny' at Hilton Coliseum. That was a classic."

Q: What was your favorite Cyclone road trip?

A: "Actually since my husband and I had a dairy farm it was hard for us to travel to away games. We usually just made the trip up to Ames for game days. I make it to some games still, but have been fortunate to give my tickets to my kids if I can’t be there in attendance. I remember during the fall many years ago, when my husband used to work in the field all morning. I would make him a sack lunch, and then we would eat on the way up to Ames just in time for kickoff."

Q: Who were some of your favorite coaches and players throughout the years?

A: "I’ve seen a lot of players come through ISU, so it is really hard to pick a favorite player or coach. Johnny Orr would have to be one of my favorites, as well as Tim Floyd. I thought (Floyd) was an outstanding coach; and really liked him until he left for Chicago. Jeff Hornacek was one of those dream stories. He came in as a walk-on and wasn’t given much of a chance He turned out to be one of the best players to come out of Iowa State and play in the NBA."

"I made the transition from the old armory with Glen Anderson to the new Hilton Coliseum, so I’ve seen them all. One other player that you can’t forget was Fred Hoiberg. He always came to play, and was an outstanding gentleman."
