Goetz Leads Iowa State to Sweep of West Virginia
Turning Point of the Match
The transition to new setter Taylor Goetz looked like it would be an uphill battle early keeping it close at 14-13 Iowa State in the first set. On the back of Tory Knuth’s serve, the Cyclones rang up a 5-0 run to pull ahead 19-13 in the first frame and eventually close it out 25-18.
Cyclone Match Ball Goes to…
Taylor Goetz. After Hudson’s injury Monday, the reigns of the Iowa State offense were in the hands of Goetz, who had not played setter all season and was only getting limited playing time at defensive specialist in Big 12 play.
Goetz, a junior from Ankeny, was fantastic in relief, recording 32 assists and 12 digs, both career-highs and also chipping in a service ace and her first career kill. The Iowa State offense hit .329 for the match and out-dug the Mountaineers 49-to-24.
Honorable mention to Victoria Hurtt, who had one of her best matches of the season with 11 kills at a .409 hitting percentage. She also tied a career-high with two solo blocks.
*Iowa State is now 7-1 all-time against West Virginia.
*The Cyclones hit .329 as a team, the team’s third-highest mark of the season and highest they have hit since hitting .340 in the second match of the year at North Dakota. It was the second time in Big 12 play this season ISU hit over .300 (vs. Baylor, Sept. 28).
*Iowa State restricted West Virginia to eight points in the third set. The last time Iowa State held a team under 10 points in a set was the second set against Colorado in 2010.
*Mackenzie Bigbee’s 10 kills marked the 16th time this season and 32nd in her career she has had at least 10 kills.
*Bria Rasmussen recorded her first ace of the season and second of her career. Her other ace came last season at West Virginia.
*Kristen Hahn’s 12 digs tied her lowest output of the season, which came at Texas Tech back on Oct. 2.
*Hahn continued her streak of matches with at least 10 digs, extending it to 63 matches.
*Caitlin Nolan tied a season-high with five assists. She also had five assists against Dayton on Sept. 12.
*Victoria Hurtt led the Cyclones with 11 kills, only the second time this season she has led ISU in kills (St. Mary’s, Sept. 13).
*Hurtt had at least 10 kills for the eighth time this season and 35th time in her ISU career.
*Hurtt tied a career-high with two solo blocks, which she also accomplished in the 2012 NCAA Volleyball Championship against IPFW.
*Taylor Goetz set a career-high in assists (32, previous high 12) and digs (12, previous high six).
*Goetz started her first career match.
