Cyclones Fall to No. 58 Kansas State, 5-2
AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team (8-6, 0-2 Big 12) lost 5-2 to No. 58 Kansas State (8-5, 2-0 Big 12) on Sunday at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
“Definitely a good bounce-back from Friday,” head coach Armando Espinosa said about the Cyclones’ 6-1 loss to Kansas.
The teams switched up the match by playing singles first, leading off with a win at No. 2 for junior Meghan Cassens. Cassens defeated Maria Panaite, 6-3, 5-0(ret.), after Panaite retired in the second set due to injury.
“We played really well in singles,” Espinosa said. “I was pretty happy with how our effort level was. Disappointed with the loss, but I think if we can continue to play with the energy and effort level we had in singles throughout the Big 12 [season], we’re going to surprise some people.”
Freshman Talisa Merchiers came back at No. 6 after a first-set loss, taking down Iva Bago in the third-set tiebreaker, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0(6). Sophomore Ana Gasparovic also fought for the third set at the No. 3 slot, but was bested by Palma Juhasz, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
After winning No. 3 doubles by default, Pronina and freshman Samantha Budai dropped No. 1 doubles, 6-1. Cassens and Gasparovic lost, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles, clinching the doubles point for Kansas State.
The Cyclones will be back at it in Big 12 action March 21 at Texas. Play is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
