Virto Advances to Match Play at British Amateur

AYRSHIRE, Scotland- Iowa State golfer Borja Virto fired rounds of 69-73 at the prestigious Royal Troon Golf Club to advance to the match play portion of the 2012 British Amateur this afternoon. Virto's 142 total tied for 15^th among the 287 competitors in the field.

Virto, a senior to-be from Gorraiz, Spain, will begin match play competition tomorrow, as the top 64 players will battle for the individual title in the next four days.

Scott Fernandez, who will be a sophomore next year for Iowa State, also competed this week at the British Amateur. Fernandez missed the cut with rounds of 71-78, tying for 136^th at 149.

Royal Troon has hosted eight Open Championships.

Virto played in all seven spring tournaments for the Cyclones last year, posting a stroke average of 75.32.
