Fernandez Named to PING Central All-Region Team
ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Iowa State sophomore golfer Scott Fernandez received yet another honor, earning a spot on the 2013 PING Central All-Region Team. The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced the selections this afternoon. Fernandez was one of 26 selected to the team and is one of 16 golfers from the Big 12 honored.
Fernandez led the Cyclones with a 71.27 stroke average this season, breaking the program mark of 71.65 set last season by Nate McCoy. The Granada, Spain native finished in the top-10 in eight of 10 tournaments, in the top-five in seven and claimed an individual title at the Furman Intercollegiate.
Fernandez racked up his share of accolades this season. The First-Team All-Big 12 performer was named to the Ben Hogan Award watch list, selected to the European team for the Palmer Cup, tied for 13th at the World Amateur and won the 2013 Men’s Canary Island Amateur Championship. Fernandez finished the season ranked 38th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, as well as ninth and 18th among collegiate golfers by Golfstat and Golfweek, respectively.
Fernandez joins McCoy and Chris Baker as the only Cyclones to receive the honor.
The Cyclone star will compete at the Palmer Cup in Wilmington Del., held June 7-9.
