AMES, Iowa- Iowa State golfers Scott Fernandez, Sam Daley and Ruben Sondjaja have been selected to play in the prestigious Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in Trinity, Texas.

Fernandez will be representing Spain, while Daley and Sondjaja will play for the Australian team.

The tournament features 80 players from 20 countries and six continents. Each team is comprised of two men and two women whom are national amateur champions and top-ranked players from their respective country.

The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship is designed to have an Olympic feel and atmosphere. The tournament features four 18-hole rounds of four-ball stroke play with the men and women’s scores being combined for the International Team competition.

The tournament will be held at Whispering Pines, the site of the 2012 and the upcoming 2014 Big 12 Championship.

All three have proved worthy of this selection in collegiate competition this fall for the Cyclones.

“I am really happy for the guys,” Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank said. “It’s a great honor to be able to represent your country. It’s exciting to have three Cyclones playing in this event. It’s an international event and I think it says a lot about the type of players we have on our team.”

The junior All-American Fernandez has two top-10 finishes and a 72.35 stroke average this season, the second-best scoring mark on the team.

“It’s really exciting for me,” Fernandez said. “It’s the last tournament of the year and it will be nice to be able to finish strong.”

Daley, a junior, boasts a 73.14 18-hole average and has one top-10 finish this season, tying for eighth at the Gopher Invitational.

“It’s awesome to be able to represent Australia in such a prestigious event,” Daley said. “We are playing on a great course and I am going to be playing with Ruben, so it is going to be a great time.”

Sondjaja, a freshman, has also impressed many in his first season as a Cyclone. Sondjaja holds the third-lowest 18-hole average on the team at 72.64. He has two top-10 finishes and became the first freshman in school history to post a 66.

“It’s an honor to be able to represent your country,” Sondjaja said. “It’s a great opportunity to play in this event and there have been some great players who have played in this tournament in the past. It is a great venue as well. The Big 12’s are there and I have never played the course before and hopefully I can gain some knowledge.”
