Sondjaja's 64 Pushes Cyclones Into Second Place
TEMPE, Ariz.- The Iowa State men’s golf team jumped into second place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational this afternoon. The Cyclones posted the second lowest team score in school history in round two, firing a 274. ISU’s two-round total of 553 (279-274) is 10 strokes behind Arizona State (543).
Arizona State’s Jon Rahm kept hold of the individual lead with a 64 today for a 126 total in the tournament.
ISU freshman Ruben Sondjaja tied the school record for lowest 18-hole score this afternoon by firing a 7-under 64. Sondjaja’s round was comprised of five birdies, one eagle and no bogeys. He played his final five holes of the day at five under.
Sondjaja is looking for his fourth top-10 finish of the season, sitting in a tie for fourth (73-64=137) heading into tomorrow’s final round.
All-American Scott Fernandez kept up his solid play. Fernandez carded a 1-under 70 to bring his two round total to 135 (65-70) for third place in the medalist race.
Freshman Nick Voke also remains in the top-10 through two rounds of play. Voke is currently tied for 10th at 139 (69-70).
Iowa State will wrap up play at the Thunderbird Invitational after tomorrow’s final round of 18 holes.
