McCoy, a native of West Des Moines, Iowa, won his third career tournament title in record-setting fashion on Sunday, capturing medalist honors at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. McCoy carded rounds of 68-65-69 for a 202 total, breaking the tournament and school record en route to a six-shot victory.
McCoy, who also won the Rees Jones Invitational in the fall, eclipsed the old 54-hole scoring mark by two shots thanks to a second-round 65 where he recorded a pair of eagles. It marks the first time in Iowa State history where a Cyclone shot 7-under in 18 holes.
The Cyclone star is in the midst of one of the finest seasons in school history. In 11 tournaments this year, McCoy has finished in the top-10 seven times. His 71.36 scoring average is on pace to set the single-season school-record and he moved up to No. 53 in the Golfweek individual national rankings.
McCoy, who is a virtual lock to earn a spot at the NCAA Regional as an individual, is trying to get his team back into the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1999. Iowa State, which is currently ranked 54th nationally by Golfweek, has one tournament left before the postseason, April 27-29 at the Big 12 Championships in Houston, Texas.
