AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team has been granted an extension to its season. For the first time since 1999, the Cyclones have qualified for postseason play, earning an invitation to the 2012 NCAA Bowling Green Regional, announced today by the NCAA selection show on NCAA.com.

The regional will be contested at The Club at Old Stone in Bowling Green, Ky., May 17-19. The top five teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 29-June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Iowa State second-year head coach Andrew Tank listed a regional bid as one the team's primary goals at the beginning of the season. He is thrilled to see the 13-year drought come to an end.

"We are really excited," Tank said. "We have worked hard for this. We have a young team and they are very pleased to be able to continue their season. I want our kids to enjoy this, because it is special to be able to play in a NCAA Regional."

The Cyclones, ranked 55th nationally by Golfweek, finished fourth or better in eight of 12 tournaments, including a title at the Bridgestone Collegiate, the first tournament win for Iowa State since 2007. Senior Nate McCoy, an All-Big 12 First-Team pick, and freshman Scott Fernandez both won individual tournament titles during the season. McCoy leads the team in stroke average at 71.68, the second-best scoring mark in school history, and Fernandez has a 72.97 scoring clip, the best rookie average in Cyclone history.

McCoy has made a huge impact on Iowa State golf and he gets to finish off his fantastic career in the postseason.

"Nate has done such a great job representing Iowa State throughout his career," Tank said. "It is really special he will have the opportunity to compete in the regional with his teammates. We knew he was going to get the chance to make it as an individual at worst, but I think it will be so special for him to share that experience with the rest of the guys and a great way for him to finish his career."
