Virto Advances to Match Play at British Amateur

AYRSHIRE, Scotland- Iowa State golfer Borja Virto fired rounds of 69-73 at the prestigious Royal Troon Golf Club to advance to the match play portion of the 2012 British Amateur this afternoon. Virto's 142 total tied for 15th among the 287 competitors in the field.

Virto, a senior to-be from Gorraiz, Spain, will begin match play competition tomorrow, as the top 64 players will battle for the individual title in the next four days.

Scott Fernandez, who will be a sophomore next year for Iowa State, also competed this week at the British Amateur. Fernandez missed the cut with rounds of 71-78, tying for 136th at 149.

Royal Troon has hosted eight Open Championships.

Virto played in all seven spring tournaments for the Cyclones last year, posting a stroke average of 75.32.
