PING/GCAA ALL-AMERICA TEAM

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State golfer Nate McCoy, who arguably produced the greatest season for a Cyclone golfer this past year, is now an All-American. McCoy was honored by a pair of golf organizations/news services this week, earning honorable mention All-American honors by both Golfweek and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

An All-Big 12 First-Team selection and a Ping All-Central Region pick, the Iowa State Athletics Department named McCoy its Male Athlete of the Year for the 2011-12 season last week.

"Being honored as an All-American is a huge accomplishment for Nate and something that is much deserved," Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank said.

The West Des Moines, Iowa native won two tournaments and finished in the top-10 in eight of 14 tournaments he played in during his historic senior season. He also ended the year with a school-record 71.65 stroke average

McCoy helped the Cyclones reach the postseason for the first time since 1999 by receiving a bid to the NCAA Bowling Green Regional. McCoy finished seventh at the regional, earning a spot at the NCAA Championships as the lone individual qualifier in the regional.

McCoy, who was the first Cyclone to make it to the NCAA finals since 1980, tied for 29th out of 156 competitors at the NCAA Championships held at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Ranked 42nd nationally in the final Golfweek ratings, McCoy also broke Iowa State's 54-hole school record with a 202 at the Hawkeye Invitational. His 65 in the second round was the first 7-under 18-hole round in the history of Iowa State golf.

"The exciting part about the Ping GCAA All-American team is that it's voted on by coaches," Tank said. "There is a committee that sits down and looks at Nate's performance, sees the wins he's had and looks at the rankings. It makes it even more special that a group of coaches decided he's worthy of the honor."

McCoy, who turned professional following the NCAA Championships, earned his playing card on the Canadian Tour. He made the cut in his first professional event, tying for 59th at the Times Colonist Island Savings Open on June 10th. He will compete this weekend at the ATB Financial Classic in Edmonton, Alberta.
