AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (18-22, 3-6 Big 12) ended Texas ace Blaire Luna’s streak of 20 and one-thirds innings of no-hit softball on Sunday with four hits in the game but the No. 6 Longhorns (38-4, 8-0 Big 12) took the 7-2 win in the weekend finale.

Junior Sara Davison had the first hit of the day for Iowa State, a single off Luna (21-1) in the second. The hit was the first given up by Luna since March 29 at Kansas, 77 batters before Davison’s at-bat, and Maddie Reese had two hits against the hurler, the first player since March 6 to collect more than a single hit against Luna.

Sophomore Lexi Slater was the third Cyclone with a hit in the contest. Slater went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two walks, the first multi-walk game of her career.

In her second complete game of the series against the Cyclones, Luna gave up two runs, none earned, on four hits, walked five and struck out 11.

An error by the Longhorn short stop put Tori Torrescano on first to start the top of the second. Davison followed with a single into no-man’s land, the ball dropping between three defenders in shallow left-center field. Jorden Spendlove executed a sac bunt to advance the runners before Cappaert drove Erica Miller home on a fielder’s choice grounder to third.

Slater walked to begin the Cyclone third, advancing to second on Reese’s single and both runners moved up again on a wild pitch from Luna. Miller was hit by a pitch but the Cyclone threat was cut short as Slater was thrown out trying to go home on a ball lost by the Longhorn catcher and Torrescano struck out to end the inning.

Texas took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs, all with two outs. Kim Bruins and Tori Schmidt had RBI-singles for the home team and a bases-loaded walk to Karina Scott ended Riley Fisher’s (2-7) day after two and two-thirds innings. Fisher was charged with five hits, five walks and a strikeout while allowing three runs.

Slater got a run back for Iowa State with an RBI-single through the left side with two outs in the top of the fourth, the 81st two-out RBI by Cyclone hitters this season.

A two-run double by Taylor Thom in the fourth extended Texas’ lead to 5-2 with one out and Bruins knocked her second run of the game with a single down the left field line for the four-run lead.

Texas would score a final run in the sixth for the 7-2 final score.

The Cyclones next play at home on Wednesday, April 17, hosting a doubleheader against UMKC at 2 and 4 p.m. CDT.
