AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore golfer Scott Fernandez arrived in Wilmington, Del., Tuesday, for the Palmer Cup. Fernandez will be competing for Team Europe this weekend in the amateur classic.

Fernandez burst into the national spotlight as the Cyclones’ top golfer, recording eight top-10 finishes in 10 tournaments, seven of which were top-five. The All-Big 12 First-Team and PING Central All-Region team member earned recognition as one of the top golfers in the country, ranking 18th individually by Golfweek and 25th by Golfstat. Fernandez is also ranked 39th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

The Cyclone star recorded two individual victories this season at the 2013 Men’s Canary Island Amateur Championships and the Furman Intercollegiate.

Fernandez was the second selection to Team Europe, behind fellow Big 12 member Julien Brun of TCU (France). Joining Fernandez will be UCLA’s Pedro Figueiredo (Portugal) and Pontus Widegren (Sweden), UCF’s Greg Eason (England), California’s Joel Stalter (France), North Florida’s Kevin Phelan (Ireland) and Nova Southeastern’s Ben Taylor (England).

The Palmer Cup, named for amateur and professional golf legend Arnold Palmer, is set to tee-off Friday, at 6:30 a.m. CT. The Ryder Cup-style event brings together the top eight collegiate players in the United States to compete against the top eight European counterparts.
