AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State was able to silence a very loud Gregory Gymnasium for one set, but the No. 3 Texas Longhorns showed the determination that made them national champions as UT won the match 3-1 (25-19, 14-25, 19-25, 22-25) Saturday evening. The loss dropped Iowa State to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12. Texas improved to 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the Big 12.

Turning Point of the Match
There were two turning points and both were on the serving of Texas' Haley Eckerman. The Waterloo, Iowa native got the ball in the second set with a 4-3 lead and sparked a 4-0 run that Iowa State was never able to recover from.

The big run on the Eckerman serve that crushed the Cyclones came in the third set. The Cyclones were ahead in the third 11-10 when Eckerman got the ball on serve. Texas scored seven-straight points on the Eckerman serve to put the third set out of Iowa State’s reach and put the Longhorns ahead in the match for good.

Cyclone Match Ball Goes to…
The Iowa State middle blockers. UT had the Preseason All-Big 12 middle blocker on its side in Khat Bell, but the Cyclone middles showed themselves as a strong group. Tory Knuth had an outstanding match serving, tying a career-high with four service aces. Knuth’s serving was key to Iowa State making a run to get ahead for good in the first set. She also had four in September against San Diego. Knuth also chipped in seven kills.

Tenisha Matlock had seven kills at a .312 hitting percentage. Matlock was also Iowa State’s leader on the block with three block assists.

Honorable mention to the three Cyclones who were in double-figures for kills in Mackenzie Bigbee (13), Ciara Capezio (12) and Victoria Hurtt (10 at a .320 hitting percentage). Caitlin Nolan had a season-high 15 digs.
