ISU Begins Spring At Desert Intercollegiate
AMES, Iowa - Coming off one of the best fall campaigns in school history, the Iowa State men’s golf team looks to build on their success this weekend (Feb. 21-23) in its spring opener at the Desert Intercollegiate.
Iowa State garnered runner-up finishes in three of the five fall tournaments, earning its first top-25 ranking in recent memory. It also marked the first time both the men’s and women’s teams at Iowa State were ranked in the top-25 at the same time.
True freshman Nick Voke was outstanding in the fall. He paced the team in stroke average (71.92), top-10 finishes (3) and had the low 18-hole round (67). Voke finished the fall ranked 126th nationally according to Golfweek. His three top-10s midway through the season already places him tied for fifth all time for top-10s in a season among ISU golfers.
Junior All-American Scott Fernandez also aided the Cyclones in their success. Fernandez was second on the team in scoring (72.35) while also picking up two more top-10s to bring his career total to 16 in just 2 ½ seasons. His 16 career top-10s is second all-time in the Iowa State record books.
Iowa State was also lifted junior Sam Daley and freshman Ruben Sondjaja.
Daley was pivotal in ISU’s early success. He improved his career scoring average to 74.39 to rank in ISU’s top-10. He added a top-10 showing at the Gopher Invitational.
Sondjaja was third on the team in stroke average with a 72.64 scoring mark and recorded a pair of top-10s during the fall season.
Rookies Voke and Sondjaja already have a combined five top-10 finishes in their career.
