Little Offense Early
After both Katie Johnson and UNI's Jamie Fisher threw perfect first innings, ISU recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the second as Sara Davison recorded a line drive single over the shortstop.
UNI made a bigger statement with its first hit of the game as Rikki Alcaraz, with a helping hand from a prevailing wind, cleared the wall in left field to move the Panthers ahead 1-0.
UNI Begins to Pull Away
Samantha Olson led off the bottom of the third with a single, one of her three hits on the day. Two batters later, Olson stole second base, one of her three steals on the day. The next pitch after the steal, Caitlin Wnek hit a home run to center field to move UNI ahead 3-0.
Wnek made it 4-0 Panthers in the bottom of the fifth as she hit a double down the line off Paris Imholz that brought Olson home. UNI would load the bases, but was unable to add on to its total at that point.
Iowa State's Offense Starts Up Again
The Iowa State offense's cold streak was temporarily stopped in the top of the sixth as Jorden Spendlove led off the inning with a double to the gap in left-center. Maddie Reese bunted Spendlove over to third, but Brittany Gomez and Sarah Hawryluk could not get the ball out of the infield and UNI got out of the inning with its shuout in tact.
Iowa State returns to Big 12 play this weekend when they travel to Stillwater, Okla. to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The first game is Friday at 6 p.m. with the games on Saturday and Sunday taking place at noon.
