STILLWATER, Okla. – The Iowa State softball team got its first Big 12 victory of the season with a 2-0 shutout win over Oklahoma State Friday night at the Cowgirl Softball Stadium. The win improved the Cyclones to 18-15 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play. OSU is now 19-16 overall and 0-5 in the Big 12.

A Great Chance Early
With one out in the top of the first, Sarah Hawryluk got to work with an infield single to give the Cyclones their first base runner of the game. Lexi Slater followed that up with a seeing-eye infield single and Aly Cappaert then drew a walk to load the bases with one out.

OSU’s ace hurler, Simone Freeman, got the Cowgirls out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts of Rachel Hartman and Sara Davison to keep the Cyclones off the board in the first.

The Chance, Taken
Gomez was back up to lead off the top of the third and she drew her 12th walk of the season. Hawryluk then laid down a heavy bunt for a hit and get Gomez to second. Two batters later, Cappaert put a liner just over OSU second baseman Ari Morrison to load the bases with one out, again.

During Hartman’s at bat, Freeman uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Gomez to score and put the Cyclones ahead. After a Hartman strikeout, Freeman had another wild pitch during Davison’s at bat. The small area behind home plate did not work in the Cyclones’ favor as a favorable bounce for OSU saw Hawryluk tagged out at the plate, but saw ISU onto the board.

Big Double Play #1
The fourth inning has been a moment of truth in recent weeks for Katie Johnson, where she is either in for the long-haul or done for the day. Tiffany Mikkelson led off bottom of the fourth with a walk and Danielle Riddle followed that up with a single to center to get two on with no one out.

After a fielder’s choice that kept runners at first and second, Whitney Whitehorn hit a liner to short. The ball did not make it all the way to Slater, who then started a 6-4-5 double play as Davison tagged second for the force and threw to Sara Rice at third so she could tag out Riddle to get ISU out of the jam.

Big Double Play #2
The bottom of the sixth started with a Tarah Ettinger walk and a Mikkelson single put runners on first and second again with no outs. A Riddle SAC bunt moved the runners over to second and third with only one out.

Gessenia DeLaCruz decided to bunt as well, but hers was popped up and Jorden Spendlove charged in to make the catch for the second out. Ettinger’s pinch runner, Michaela Patton was halfway home when Spendlove made the catch. The Cyclone first baseman fired it over to third for the third out and it got ISU out of another jam.

Insurance Run
Spendlove drew a one-out walk and that was followed up by Liana Henry drawing a one-out walk of her own. Gomez then hit a single through the left side of the OSU infield to load the bases with one away.

Hawryluk’s at-bat resulted in a grounder to third. However, Mikkelson’s throw home for the force took Cavin off the plate, and allowed Spendlove to slide on home to give ISU a 2-0 advantage.

While the insurance run was not needed for the final result, it provided the Cyclones with some security as OSU got two runners on base, but Johnson was able to keep her cool and get the three outs for her fourth career shutout.

Player of the Game
Sarah Hawryluk. The senior from Canada was a critical part to the ISU effort Friday night. Hawryluk finished the night 3-for-4 from the plate. The one at-bat that did not result in a hit was the at-bat that the Cyclones scored the second run of the game.

She also had a busy day in the outfield, making five catches in right while battling the setting sun that was in her face for much of the game.

On Deck
Game two of the series between the Cyclones and Cowgirls will start tomorrow at noon.
