Cyclones Notch 9 Top-Fives In Weekend Finale

AMES, Iowa – Nine top-five finishes highlighted the Iowa State track and field teams’ weekend finale, Saturday, as three Cyclones notched personal records in their respective events. Edward Kemboi made his season debut in impressive fashion, boosting himself into the nation’s top-five in the 800-meter run.

Mt. SAC Relays
Edward Kemboi took fifth overall in the men’s 800m, competing in the elite invitational section of the event. Kemboi made the most of his outdoor debut, crossing the line in 1:46.14. The Eldoret, Kenya, native was the second collegian to cross the line in the race, only behind Mississippi State’s Brandon McBride, who posted a time of 1:45.35. Saucony’s Duane Solomon won the event with a mark of 1:43.88.

Kemboi was just .08 seconds off of his personal best and program record of 1:46.06 in the event. The three-time All-American currently holds the second-fastest time in the NCAA with the performance.

LSU Alumni Gold
In Baton Rouge, La., a large group of Cyclones took the track at the LSU Alumni Gold meet. Ivan Tamba got things off on the right foot with a personal best in the 100-meter dash. Tamba posted a mark of 10.90. Jared Ingram was close behind in 10.98.

Kayla Sanborn took second overall in the women’s weight throw. Sanborn notched a personal record for the third consecutive meet, throwing a distance of 189 feet, 3 inches in her runner-up performance. Sanborn sits at sixth in program history in the event, improving her previous mark by 18 inches.

Ese Okoro finished third in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, notching her third consecutive sub-58 second performance of the season. The Birmingham, England, native crossed the line in 57.21 seconds. Okoro has posted a time of 57.77 seconds or better in each of her races this season.

On the men’s side of the 400H, Derek Jones took seventh, clocking a time of 52.19 seconds.

Hannah Willms notched a third-place finish in the women’s high jump, clearing a mark of 5’09.25”. Willms is now tied for fifth in program history in the event, equaling Tiffanie Synacek’s mark set back in 2008. Kelly McCoy finished sixth in the competition with a mark of 5’07.25”.

Kendra White posted her fastest time of the season at 54.56 seconds in the 400-meter dash. White finished sixth overall in the race.

Brandon Barnes notched an outdoor best in the 800-meter run. Barnes completed the race in 1:52.73, nearly a full second faster than his previous outdoor mark (1:53.71).

Colleen Riley notched her second personal record in as many meets in the 1,500-meter run this afternoon. Riley crossed the line with a fourth-place finish and a new PR of 4:34.33. Taylor McDowell and Maddie Nagle also competed in the race, finishing eighth and 11th, respectively.
