AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s golf team was focused during the week in preparation for the 2014 NCAA West Regional, May 8-10 at the Tumble Creek at Suncadia Resort in Elum, Wash.

The Cyclones, ranked 25th nationally by Golfweek, are making their school-record fifth-straight NCAA Regional appearance and yearning for their first trip to the NCAA finals. Twice in the last four years, the Cyclones were just five shots shy from advancing on (2010 and 2011).

Iowa State head coach Christie Martens knows how special it would be for her team to advance to the National Tournament.

“Making it to regionals is a great accomplishment, but now it’s about testing ourselves and seeing how good can we be and embrace the process of getting better,” Martens said. “Now we have two seniors in our lineup that really want that to be a big part of their legacy.”

This year’s NCAA Championship will be contested at the Tulsa Country Club, May 20-23 in Tulsa, Okla. The top eight teams and low two individuals not among the top eight teams in each of the three regionals will advance on to the NCAA finals.

Iowa State is led by its top-four players Sasikarn On-iam, Prima Thammaraks, Cajsa Persson and Chonlada Chayanun. All four boast stroke averages of 74.05 or below, rank in the top-150 nationally and have the capability of going low at any tournament, as attested by their 10 combined top-10 finishes.

Seniors On-iam and Thammaraks have been the backbone of ISU’s success in the last four years. Both will be playing in their fourth NCAA Regional, joining Punpaka Phuntumabamrung and Beth Bader as the only Cyclones to achieve the feat.

On-iam leads the team in stroke average at 73.28 and is coming off a top-10 performance at the Big 12 Championship (T9th) en route to all-tournament honors. On-iam was named Big 12 Golfer of the Month in March after tying for medalist honors at the Hurricane Invitational.

Thammaraks is fourth on the team in stroke average (74.04) and has two top-10s on the season. She leads all current Cyclones with eight career top-10 finishes.
