AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (7-3-1, 2-1 Big 12) wrapped up day one of the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships tied for third-place at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Cyclones trail first place Texas by 18 through two events.

ISU’s 200 medley relay team of Jr. Bre Loeschke, Sr. Imelda Wistey, So. Kaylee Kucera and Jr. Amanda Paulson started the evening with a fourth-place finish for the Cyclones. The squad’s time of 1:41.41 is 0.01-seconds shy of matching their personal best, which is fourth all-time in Iowa State school history.

“We were a little disappointed in the results of that relay because we know we can swim a lot faster, and unfortunately everybody was trying to be too perfect rather than just standing up and racing,” Iowa State head swimming coach Duane Sorenson said. “All four of them learned a valuable lesson out of that, and I think that the rest of their meet is going to be fantastic.”

In the 800 freestyle relay, ISU’s team of Karyl Clarete, Brooke Evensen, Katie Vollhaber and Elizabeth Kleiner knocked out an Iowa State school record by 5.22-seconds with a time of 7:18.24.

“The team’s really pumped up for that. It just shows our training is really paying off. Karyl did a great job leading off, and Brooke just had a fabulous split,” Sorenson said. “All four women just did fantastic. It was a big goal for them to get the school record, and they didn’t just get it, they smashed it.”

Clarete recorded a personal best in the 200 freestyle with a lead-off split of 1:48.13, while Kleiner notched a lifetime best split of 1:50.00.

Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with prelims in the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 400 medley relay. One-meter diving prelims begin at 1 p.m. with finals kicking off at 6 p.m.
