Cyclones Look for 4th Road Win at Northern Iowa
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (3-3-1, 0-1 Big 12) will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa on Sat., Jan 25 to take on the Panthers (0-7, 0-2 Summit) of Northern Iowa. UNI is the fourth Summit League opponent for Iowa State this season.
Dating back to the 1992-93 season, the Cyclones are 19-0 against their instate foe. Current Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson has yet to lose to the Panthers in his 17-year tenure.
“They have a few good individuals, and they will swim well. Depth wise they are not as strong as we are,” Sorenson said. “We are just going to go out there and swim really solid. We should win the meet – there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it.”
While the Cyclones are undefeated (3-0-1) on the road throughout the 2013-14 season, the team was handed their third loss of the year at home to Illinois last Friday. Iowa State was without senior leader Emily Wiltsie and middle distance specialist Sarah Deis against the Fighting Illini.
“Our team was really sick for this last meet, so hopefully we are all feeling better. Getting some good times under our belt would be good,” junior Amanda Paulson said. “I know that we were really missing out on Sarah Deis because she wasn’t able to swim. Hopefully we are all back in the water.”
According to Sorenson, Wiltsie is listed as “day-by-day” and will be a “day of travel” decision.
Head diving coach Jeff Warrick and his squad are preparing for UNI after an impressive performance against Illinois. During last week’s dual, the Cyclone stole the diving well, outscoring the Fighting Illini 26-12 and sweeping first and second place in the 1 and 3-meter events.
“We just want to continue on with what we did against Illinois,” Warrick said. “I think they just need to remember that they probably started diving because they enjoyed it. They really have to have that love for the sport. When they focus in on that, it takes a lot of the pressure off because they aren’t focused on the outcome – they are just focused on enjoying themselves.”
