AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s top divers Jessica Henderson and Elyse Brouillette hit the road for Minneapolis, Minn. next week for the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships. The three-day event will be held at the University Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus.

The Cyclone divers are coming off an “outstanding” performance at the Big 12 Conference Championships in Austin, Texas a week ago, according to Iowa State head diving coach Jeff Warrick. Both Henderson and Brouillette advanced to the final heats on all three boards, racking up four top-five finishes in total.

“For them to make all three finals was great. I thought they competed really well, especially in all of the prelims. In the one-meter and platform finals, I just couldn’t have asked for better,” Warrick said of his veteran divers. “I think that’s what they have to take forward going into this meeting.”

Henderson made her mark on Iowa State history last week by erasing a 28-year-old school record on the one-meter board previously held by Janet Lahti (309.30). The senior diver’s 314.40-point performance earned her a second-place finish at the conference championships.

ISU’s 2012-13 Most Valuable Diver, Brouillette earned Big 12 Co-Diver of the Week honors following her personal-best performance in the three-meter event with a score of 329.48 against TCU. Iowa State student-athletes have earned conference recognition 11 times in the Big 12 era, two of which belong to Brouillette.

“We have been talking about peaking for these meets and what we have to do to make that happen,” Warrick said. “It’s not a scientific kind of thing, but if Big 12s is any indication of them peaking, I think it’s a great sign. They just have to ride that wave and keep going.”

Henderson and Brouillette have led the Cyclones on all three boards throughout the 2013-14 season, and the duo owns six top-five scores in Iowa State school history.

With a large field of divers – 51 on one-meter, 49 on three-meter and 28 on platform so far – mental strength will be key for Iowa State throughout the championships, according to Warrick. The 16-year veteran coach says his divers have to “trust their training” and stay focused through the long waits between dives.

Their strong performances in both prelims and finals at the conference championships may play as an advantage for Henderson and Brouillette. With a composite scoring system, prelim scores will be carried over into finals at Zones – the sum of prelim and final heat scores will be used to rank the finalists.

The NCAA Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships kick off on Monday at 11 a.m. with women’s one-meter prelims. Women’s three-meter and platform events follow at 4:30 p.m. CT Tuesday and 11 a.m. CT Wednesday, respectively. Finals in each event are scheduled to begin 15-minutes after the conclusion of prelims heats.
