AMES, Iowa – For the first time in 15 years the Iowa State softball team was represented on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) DI All-Midwest Region First Team, which was announced Thursday.

ISU centerfielder Brittany Gomez and designated player Aly Cappaert were named to the First Team, and catcher Rachel Hartman and shortstop Lexi Slater were bestowed with Third Team honors. This is the first NFCA All-Region award for all four players. The quartet’s All-Region selections bring ISU’s all-time total to 20 across 16 different student-athletes. This also marks the first time in program history that four Cyclones have been named to an All-Region team. The previous record was three in 1995.

Cappaert and Gomez become the sixth and seventh players in ISU program history to earn NFCA All-Region First Team honors. All the previous First Team honors came before the turn of the century, the most recent being Erin Woods in 1999.

Gomez, from New Braunfels, Texas, put up one of the top offensive seasons in Iowa State history in 2014. The sophomore finished 2014 with a .397 batting average, the third-highest for a season in ISU history and 75 hits, second-most in program history. Gomez’s Big 12 numbers slated her with a .368 batting average, 10th in conference play, and 21 hits. Gomez became ISU’s all-time stolen bases leader with 55 in her career, 24 coming this season. On Monday, Gomez was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team for the second consecutive season.

Cappaert, a sophomore from Ankeny, had one of the top power-hitting seasons in ISU program history. She finished the season with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs. The 11 four-baggers tie her for third in a single-season in ISU history, while the 45 RBIs were the second-most in ISU history. Cappaert’s .366 batting average is the seventh-highest in a single-season in ISU history. She was also Iowa State’s top walker of the season, drawing 23 walks. Cappaert finished the season with a team-high 102 total bases, the second-most in a single season in ISU history.

Hartman, a freshman from Las Flores, Calif., had one of the top freshman seasons in Iowa State history. She is now the ISU freshman record holder for best batting average (.378), slugging percentage (.538), on-base percentage (.414), RBIs (34) and she tied for the most doubles by a Cyclone freshman with 13. Her .378 batting average ranks fifth for a single-season in Iowa State history and her 13 doubles are tied for fourth in program history. Hartman started 53 games behind the plate for ISU, amassing 59 hits. Her form in the second half of the season was outstanding, as she hit .364 in Big 12 play.

Slater, a junior from Ramona, Calif., was another key component to Iowa State’s offense in 2014. Coming into the season with a career .248 batting average, Slater hit .345 for the season with eight home runs and 34 RBIs. She tied ISU’s single-season doubles record with her 16 two-baggers and her slugging percentage of .595 was nearly 200 points higher than her 2013 mark. Slater’s 100 total bases for the season make Cappaert and her the first Cyclone teammates to reach record 100 total bases in the same season. Slater’s 100 is tied for the third most in a single season in ISU program history.

By being named to the All-Region team, the quartet are now eligible to be named to the NFCA All-America teams, which will be determined within the next two weeks.
