AMES, Iowa – Experimenting with various designs of equipment has become the norm in college football and Iowa State has entered into the ring.

Iowa State head football coach Paul Rhoads announced today that his team will wear matte-finish helmets for select games. The matte helmets are different than the glossy helmets ISU normally wears. A matte-finish helmet won’t reflect light like glossy helmets.

The Cyclone football team liked the idea of trying something new and Rhoads agreed.

“I’m a traditionalist,” Rhoads said. “However, this helmet provides us a chance to test different designs while staying within the concept of our school colors and brand.”

Jon Sedgwick, Iowa State’s Director of Equipment Operations, thinks the fans will like the new look.

“The current helmet has a metallic, high-gloss look,” Sedgwick said. “The matte helmet is much different. It’s one of the newer trends out there. The players seem to like it and it’s not that much of a drastic change.”
