Iowa State Athletics Honors Its Best

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Athletics Department honored its best Monday night as more than 138 student-athletes were recognized for academic achievement at the annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet in Hilton Coliseum.
Among those honored were six athletes who have maintained a 4.0 grade-point average: Anna Holtermann (track and field), Hannah Johnson (volleyball), Sarah Nelson (swimming and diving), Jessica Stewart (soccer), Jamie Straube (volleyball) and Jared Weaver (football).
"The Scholar Athlete Banquet is our annual event to recognize the academic accomplishments of our Cyclones," Iowa State Athletics Life Skills Coordinator Molly Parrot said. "It is not easy to balance the demands of Division I athletics with the academic rigor of this institution, so we are happy to host this event each spring."
Sixteen Cyclones were honored for maintaining the highest grade-point average on their respective teams by being named to the All-Cyclone Team. The honorees were Elly Arganbright (women's basketball), Jennifer Drahozal (softball), Melvin Ejim (men's basketball), Grant Jacobson (men's track and field), Brandon Jones (wrestling), Maria Macedo (tennis), Charles Paul (men's cross country), Andrew Peter (men's golf), Taylor Petersen (women's cross country), Michelle Shealy (gymnastics), Prima Thammaraks (women's golf), Anna Holtermann (women's track and field), Hannah Johnson (volleyball), Sarah Nelson (swimming and diving), Jessica Stewart (soccer) and Jared Weaver (football). Holterman, Johnson, Nelson, Stewart and Weaver were named captains of the All-Cyclone Team.
Iowa State gymnast Michelle Browning, Brett Bueker (football) and Kristin Paulson (women's golf) received the Chik-Fil-A Community of Champions Award for being significantly involved in community service and demonstrating leadership and sportsmanship while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0.
Head men's Golf Coach Andrew Tank and head women's golf coach Christie Martens accepted the Team GPA Award for their teams, which is presented annually to the coach of the men's and women's teams with the highest grade-point average for the Spring 2011 and Fall 2011 semesters.
Twenty student-athletes were recognized as members of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society whose members are upper-class student-athletes maintaining a 3.40 or higher cumulative GPA into their junior year.
Assistant strength and conditioning coach for Olympic Sports Peter Link earned the SAAC Above and Beyond Award as a staff member who provides exemplary support to Iowa State student-athletes.
The Iowa State Letterwinners Club presented its All-Around Award to third-team All-Big 12 and first-team Academic All-Big 12 men's basketball player Scott Christopherson and former Big 12 Conference Gymnast-of-the-Year Michelle Browning. The award is presented to one male and one female Cyclone student-athlete in recognition of significant athletic contribution, academic excellence, leadership and participation in community service throughout their respective careers at Iowa State.
The Iowa State gymnastics team was the Cyclone Challenge Cup winners. The Cup goes to the Iowa State team that tallied the most points through individual and team participation in Iowa State Student-Athlete programming.
