ISU Topped At Iowa In Cy-Hawk Showdown
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa State gymnastics team (4-7 overall, 0-2 Big 12) could not capitalize on the momentum it built following a season-high 49.125 floor effort heading into its last rotation and fell to Iowa (7-5 overall) 196.375-194.575 Friday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa's team score was its highest of the season.
The Cyclones won two event titles Friday night. Michelle Shealy's season-high-tying 9.875 tally on beam was the top score on the apparatus. Camille Santerre-Gervais tied Iowa's Emma Stevenson for top honors on bars with a score of 9.850. The Hawkeyes' Emma Willis won the vault crown with a 9.925 score. Kyra Trowbridge won the floor title with a 9.900 score. Iowa's Sydney Hoerr won the all-around with a 39.400 mark.
The Cyclones' impressive floor performance was bolstered by four gymnasts who scored at least 9.825. Milan Ivory (9.850), Elizabeth Stranahan (9.850), Henrietta Green (9.825) and Caitlin Brown (9.825) were Iowa State's top floor performers. Iowa State's 49.125 floor score was its highest on any event this season.
Iowa State equaled it season-best score on vault with a 48.700 effort. Brown led the way for the Cyclones, scoring 9.800, a mark that ties for Iowa State's season-high vault tally.
ISU's bars score of 48.800 will improve it season average, as the Cyclones entered tonight's meet averaging 48.616 on the event.
Iowa State had a number of career-high scores at the competition. Sammie Pearsall's 9.750 on floor was a new personal best. Alex Marasco posted a career-high 9.775 score on vault. Elizabeth Stranahan notched a personal best on bars with a 9.750 effort.
The Cyclones compete again Sunday when they travel to Los Angeles to face No. 6 UCLA, No. 3 Michigan and California in Pauley Pavilion. The quadrangular competition is set to begin at 4 p.m. CT.
