ISU Posts Top Road Score; Loses At No. 3 Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Iowa State gymnastics team (4-11 overall, 0-2 Big 12 Conference) posted its highest road score of the 2013 campaign Saturday in a 196.825-195.125 loss at No. 3 Michigan (17-1 overall) in the Crisler Center. Sophomore Caitlin Brown highlighted the Cyclones' effort with a career-high 9.875 beam score that earned her first-place honors on the apparatus.
Michigan had three gymnasts (Natalie Beilstein, Joanna Sampson and Austin Sheppard) tie for first place on vault with 9.925 efforts. Beilstein also earned top honors on bars, scoring 9.925. Sampson won the floor (9.925) and all-around (39.500) titles at the meet.
Iowa State junior Michelle Shealy tied for second place on beam with a 9.850 effort and senior Elizabeth Stranahan was runner-up in the all-around with a score of 39.025. Stranahan topped Michigan's Katie Zurales in the all-around competition who is ranked 12th nationally. Sampson is ranked No. 2 in the all-around in the country.
Junior Henrietta Green highlighted a strong 49.075 floor effort by the Cyclones. Green scored a career-high 9.875 on floor en route to a tie for second place on the event. Brown (9.825) and junior Milan Ivory (9.850) were also strong contributors to the ISU floor score.
ISU tied its season high on vault, scoring 48.700 on the apparatus. Stranahan was Iowa State's top performer on vault with a career-high 9.850. Stranahan's 9.850 effort is Iowa State's top score on vault this season.
Green posted a season-high score of 9.850 on bars. Junior Hailey Johnson notched a season-high mark on vault (9.750), while freshman Alex Marasco (9.775) tied her career high on the apparatus.
The Cyclones begin postseason action in their next meet when Iowa State plays host to the Big 12 Championship on March 23. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. CT in Hilton Coliseum.
