Iowa State Closes Out Spring Season At Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Iowa State Cyclones finished their spring season on Saturday with three two-set matches against North Dakota, UNI and Concordia at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion. The Cyclones split sets with North Dakota and UNI and was swept by Concordia.

In the first match of the day, Morgan Kuhrt led the Cyclone offense with seven kills, followed by Victoria Hurtt, who had six, as North Dakota took set one and Iowa State won set two to split the match, 23-25, 25-13. Iowa State held North Dakota to .074 hitting, collecting five total blocks and 29 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Andie Malloy led Iowa State in both blocks (two) and digs (eight).

The Cyclones fell behind a set against UNI but came back in set two, earning the 15-25, 25-16 tie. Both teams struggled on offense, Iowa State hitting .110 and UNI with a .136 mark, but Iowa State dug 37 balls, including 15 digs from sophomore Bria Rasmussen who totaled a team-high 26 digs in the tournament. Senior middle blocker Tenisha Matlock led Iowa State at the net with three total blocks and Kuhrt and Natalie Vondrak each had one block.

In stark opposition to the match against the Panthers, Iowa State did not have a block in its 22-25, 20-25 loss to Concordia but hit .318 behind eight kills from right side Mackenzie Bigbee. Rasmussen led the defense again, this time with five digs, and Kuhrt had two digs.

On the whole, Matlock was tops on the squad with 16 kills and three total blocks. On offense, Matlock was followed closely by Kuhrt’s 14 kills and 12 kills from Hurtt. Rasmussen’s 26 digs led four Cyclones who posted double-digit dig totals and Kuhrt, Malloy and Vondrak each had two blocks.

Iowa State closes out the spring with a 3-3-2 record and will be back in action for the 2013 regular season in the fall.
