Cyclone Notebook
- Iowa State is playing its 107th season and the fourth under head coach Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg has led the Cyclones to the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons and is seeking to become the second coach in school history to earn three berths in a row (Tim Floyd, 1995-97). Hoiberg is 62-39 overall at Iowa State.
- The Cyclones erased a slow start and a three-point halftime deficit to defeat Augustana, 90-68, last Sunday in its lone exhibition game. ISU shot 52.4 percent in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 54-29 and using a 21-0 run midway through the half to earn the win.
- Iowa State, which had four players in double figures in the game, was led by DeAndre Kane’s 19 point-10 rebound double-double. Freshmen Matt Thomas (16) and Monté Morris (11) combined for 27 points and Georges Niang added 10 points, seven boards and six assists in the win.
- Iowa State is 86-20 in home season openers, having won its last 15 debuts at Hilton Coliseum. The last loss came on Nov. 23, 1997 when the Cyclones fell to Northern Iowa (54-48). The Cyclones are the last Big 12 team to open their season, with the nine other teams starting on Friday.
- Iowa State is playing without senior preseason All-Big 12 pick Melvin Ejim, who suffered a hyperextended left knee and bone bruise in practice on Oct. 30. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks and his 25-game consecutive start streak will come to an end against UNCW.
- The Cyclones could see seven players see their first regular season action Sunday, including four transfers (Kane, K.J. Bluford, Daniel Edozie, Dustin Hogue), a redshirt freshman (Sherron Dorsey-Walker) and two true freshmen (Morris, Thomas).
- Iowa State has won its last 13 nonconference home games. The last loss against a nonconference opponent at home came on Nov. 30, 2011 to UNI in Hoiberg’s second season as head coach.
- ISU is playing just its second game against a school from the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cyclones beat William & Mary in 1979 in the only other meeting.
- Kane (93) and Niang (23) have made a combined 116 starts. Hogue, Thomas and Naz Long are expected to make their first career starts Sunday. It would be the first time since 2007-08 vs. Winston-Salem State that ISU started three players with no college starts in the season opener (Brackins, Haluska, Petersen).

Iowa State Exhibition Recap
- Iowa State beat Augustana 90-68 in its lone exhibition game this season last Sunday evening. The win improves the Cyclones to 46-4 in exhibition games since 1983-84.
- ISU struggled out of the gates in the game and Augustana came out hot, hitting five-of-its-first-six shots to open up a nine-point lead just two and a half minutes into the game.
- Monté Morris went the length of the court in 3.4 seconds and hit a floater as time expired to draw the Cyclones to within three (39-36) at the break.
- The Cyclones started much better in the second half, taking the lead back on a Georges Niang layup at the 18:41 mark. Holding a 53-48 edge with 14:36 left, ISU went on a 21-0 run over the next six minutes to break open the game.
- DeAndre Kane battled cramping and played just 20 minutes, but the senior transfer from Marshall finished with a team-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Cyclones. Kane, a 58.8 percent career free-throw shooter hit 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
- Freshmen Matt Thomas (16) and Morris (11) combined for 27 points, including 17 in the second half.
- Georges Niang had 10 points, seven boards and six assists in 26 minutes of action.
- Niang and Naz Long led the team in minutes played (26).
- Iowa State didn’t record its first assist of the game until just 3:46 remained in the first half. The Cyclones finished the game with 18 dimes. ISU had nine turnovers in the first half and just four in the second.

Series Notes vs. UNC Wilmington
- Iowa State and UNC Wilmington are meeting for the first time.
- Iowa State is 1-0 all-time against teams from the Colonial Athletic Association. A Fred Hoiberg coached team has never faced a team from the CAA.
- UNC Wilmington, which opens its season Friday at Iowa, went 10-20 overall last season and 5-13 in the CAA. The Seahawks have been picked to finish eighth in the league this season.
- The Seahawks’ top returning scorer is guard Chris Dison (9.8 ppg). UNCW returns four starters from last year’s team.
- In two career games against UNCW, DeAndre Kane averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Both games were wins for Kane, who was playing for Marshall at the time.
