SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Iowa State’s softball team closed out the Marriott Bronco Classic with a pair of wins Sunday at the SCU Softball Field. The Cyclones started the day by shutting out hosts Santa Clara, 3-0 and followed it up with a come-from-behind victory over San Diego that ended on a walk-off single by Lexi Slater.

The wins improved Iowa State to 12-2 on the season.

Iowa State 3, Santa Clara 0
Keys to the Game
Iowa State got the better of the first three innings, but was not able to drive any runs in, stranding three runners across the first three innings. While Katie Johnson had not allowed any hits through the first three innings, she did have to find her way out of a sticky situation in the home half of the second, with the Broncos getting runners on the corners with one out. Johnson was able to induce a grounder and a strikeout to get out of the jam.

The Cyclones finally opened up the scoring in the fourth as Aly Cappaert led off the inning with a double. After being bunted over to third, Lexi Slater drove Cappaert home with a double in the gap of right-center to make it 1-0.

ISU was back to getting runs on the board in the sixth inning, as it was Cappaert and Slater again getting the rally together to put runners on the corners with one out. Jorden Spendlove drove in Cappaert with a single to center, and Sara Rice drove in Slater the next at-bat to put ISU ahead 3-0.

Santa Clara made ISU sweat in the seventh, loading the bases with only one out accounted for. However, Johnson was on call again with a strikeout to get the second out and a grounder to third to preserve her second career shutout.

Player of the Game
Katie Johnson. The freshman hurler was outstanding again today, not allowing her first hit of the game until the fourth inning. Her work to get ISU out of the bases loaded jam in the seventh was also exemplary. Johnson went all seven innings, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out five to record her second shutout of the season.

Iowa State 3, San Diego 2
Keys to the Game
San Diego got off to a fast start as Dana Prelsnik led off the game with a triple and was scored by the next batter, Tatum Schultz, to give the Toreros an early 1-0 lead. Prelsnik returned the favor to her teammates in the third as she fired a double that scored Morgan Kurtz to put USD ahead 2-0.

Iowa State’s bats finally got going in the fourth as the Cyclones were able to load the bases with just one out. Sara Rice brought home a run by not swinging the bat, drawing a bases loaded walk to reduce the lead to 2-1. Maddie Reese tied the game at the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to center.

Both teams had an inning with at least two base-runners on, but both teams saw their time at the plate end without a run to show for it. The score remained tied, 2-2 headed to the bottom of the seventh.

In the seventh, Sarah Hawryluk started the rally with a single and Sara Davison took a sacrifice bunt to move her fellow senior over to second base. San Diego then decided to intentionally walk Cappaert, who had a combined four hits across Sunday’s two games and put the onus on Lexi Slater. The junior shortstop delivered with a single to leftfield that scored the speedy Hawryluk and gave the Cyclones their 12th win of the season.

Player of the Game
Lexi Slater. The junior shortstop was 0-of-2 at the plate when she came to bat with two on and one out in the bottom of the seventh, but she delivered the big hit to give Iowa State the win.

On Deck
Iowa State will travel to Baton Rouge, La. for the Purple & Gold Challenge, hosted by LSU, next weekend. The Cyclones will start the tournament with a Friday doubleheader against Lamar at 9 a.m. and Jackson State at 2 p.m.
