STILLWATER, Okla. – The Iowa State softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Oklahoma State Saturday at Cowgirl Softball Stadium. OSU won the first game 11-0 in five innings and took the second game 7-6 in nine innings. Iowa State is now 18-17 overall and 1-5 in the Big 12. Oklahoma State improved to 21-16 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

Game Two: Oklahoma State 7, Iowa State 6 (9 innings)
Coming off the loss in the first game, Iowa State took advantage of OSU putting the inexperienced Meagan Lively in the circle. Brittany Gomez started with a walk, Sarah Hawryluk posted an infield single and Lexi Slater also drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Aly Cappaert put the first runs on the board with a 2-RBI single to left. Jorden Spendlove would bring home another run to make it 3-0 Cyclones after one.

A Danielle Riddle home run made it 3-2 ISU after one inning and then it was Riddle again who put OSU ahead with a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the third to make it 4-3 Cowgirls.

ISU manufactured a run to tie it in the top of the fifth. Hawryluk led off the inning with an infield single. She was then bunted over by Slater via a sacrifice bunt and then Capapert grounded to first to allow Hawryluk to move over to third. It was up to Rachel Hartman to make the big hit to bring her home and she did with a single to left-center to tie the game at 4-4. The game would not stay like that for long as a Tarah Ettinger RBI-double made it 5-4 Cowgirls after five innings.

OSU brought in its ace, Simone Freeman, to close out the final two innings. In the seventh, Gomez used her speed to leg out an infield single to get the ISU rally going. Two batters later, Slater came up to take on a pitcher she had relatively little success against so far during the series. All of that changed in one swing of the bat. Slater hit a big home run to left to move Iowa State back ahead, 6-5. It was her sixth of the season, a career-high after she had five in each of her first two seasons as a Cyclone.

The bottom of the seventh did not get off to an ideal start with Riddle reaching on an infield single and then Johnson throwing a wild pitch on Freeman’s first pitch of her at-bat. However, ISU battled back with a strikeout of Freeman and inducing a pop up on Tiffany Mikkelson to get the second out. It looked like ISU was home free when Tarah Ettinger popped up. However, Davison lost a battle with the Stillwater sun and could not bring in the catch to end the game, allowing Riddle to score and tie the game at 6-6 to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Mikkelson led off with a walk and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Madison Ellis then drove home the winning run with a line drive to left to make it 7-6 Cowgirls.

Game One: Oklahoma State 11, Iowa State 0 (5 innings)
Not much went in favor of the Cyclones in the first game of the doubleheader as ISU saw itself down 3-0 after the first inning and 7-0 after two.

In the top of the third inning, Brittany Gomez finally got Iowa State off the mark with its first hit of the game on an infield single. The hit was her 50th of the season, marking the 26th 50-hit season by a Cyclone in program history. Gomez becomes the seventh player in ISU history to have multiple 50-hit seasons.

On Deck
Iowa State will take on an in-state rival mid-week as the Cyclones make the short drive to Des Moines to take on Drake Wednesday at 5 p.m.
