Brown Prepares For NCAA Championships
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Caitlin Brown will compete in the 2014 NCAA Gymnastics Championships in Birmingham, Ala. at BJCC Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. Brown will compete in the all-around competition after qualifying for the championships with a career-high score of 39.400 at NCAA Regionals on April 5. A free, live stream of Friday night’s event will be available on NCAA.com.
This will mark the fourth time in the past five years that a Cyclone gymnast has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the all-around. Michelle Shealy (2013 and 2011) and Michelle Browning (2010) are the other Iowa State representatives to do so.
Brown, one of 12 gymnasts nationally to qualify for the all-around as an individual, will be rotating with Alabama throughout the evening. Brown will have a bye in the first rotation before beginning her night on uneven bars. For a detailed event rotation schedule, see the link to the right.
The Apple Valley, Minn. native put up scores of 9.8 or higher on every apparatus at regionals in Baton Rouge, La. to take the top all-around spot of gymnasts to not qualify with their respective teams. Brown set a new career high in the meet on vault with a score of 9.875, and also tied her career high in the floor exercise with another score of 9.9875.
The all-around competition will be decided on Friday, with the first session beginning at 1 p.m. and the second session, which Brown will compete in, at 7 p.m. However, Brown will also have a chance to qualify for Sunday’s individual event finals if she places in the top-four (including ties) of a single event.
