Riley Sets ISU Steeplechase Record In Drake Finale
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Cyclones continued to rewrite the program’s record books on Saturday at the Drake Relays. Iowa State student-athletes notched two more top-10 performances this afternoon, bringing the weekend total to six.
Colleen Riley ran the fastest time in Iowa State women’s steeplechase history, clocking in at 10:33.32. Riley ran in the middle of the pack for the majority of the race and picked off several runners over the final two laps. The St. Louis, Mo., native broke former Iowa State standout Meaghan Nelson’s previous mark by nearly 6 seconds in the effort, a mark that stood at 10:39.11.
The women’s 4x400-meter relay squad of Kendra White, Ese Okoro, Dana Christensen and Krista Shoeman was just off of the program record of 3:36.22 for the second consecutive day. The team posted a mark of 3:36.81 in the race after clocking in at 3:36.39 in yesterday’s prelims. Their prelim time ranks as the second-fastest in program history.
Cameron Ostrowski notched a fourth-place finish in the high jump in his first competition of the 2014 outdoor season. Ostrowksi cleared a height of 7 feet, 1 inch, marking the eighth time in his career he has jumped 7 feet or higher. The Burlington, Ill., native had been sidelined since the NCAA indoor championships with an ankle injury.
The women’s distance medley relay team of Maggie Gannon, Britney Williams, Ejiro Okoro and Samantha Bluske took third overall. The squad put together the third-fastest performance in program outdoor history, crossing the line in 11:19.29.
