RHODES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s golf team made a major move in the second round of the Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship Saturday afternoon. The Cyclones carded a 2-under-par 286 at The Harvester Golf Club to jump into a tie for second after two rounds.

ISU is at 606 through 36 holes, one shot behind Baylor at 605. The Cyclones’ 286 tally is the second-best 18-hole score for an ISU team in a conference tournament, and it ties for the seventh-best score in school history.

It was a total group effort for Iowa State. All five Cyclones shot 73 or lower this afternoon, led by senior Punpaka Phuntumabamrung’s 4-under 68. The Cyclone star was 3-under through five holes before suffering back-to-back bogeys on No. 6 and No. 7.

Phuntumabamrung then rallied with three birdies on the final 11 holes to register her career-best-tying round. It marks the lowest round ever recorded by a Cyclone in a conference tournament and puts Phuntumabamrung in second place at 145 with one round to go.

“I try to stay focused on my game rather than a score, and I thought I did that well today,” Phuntumabamrung said. “I try to go shot-by-shot and do my best. I think that helped me stay focused for the entire round.”

Phuntumabamrung’s record-setting score puts her in the heart of the medalist race. She is three shots out of first place currently occupied by Baylor’s Lauren Taylor at 142 (74-68).

ISU’s Chonlada Chayanun rallied with a 72 this afternoon and Sasikarn On-iam, Cajsa Persson and Prima Thammaraks all carded a 73 to put the trio in a tie for 15th at 154.

Persson posted a 4-under 32 on the front nine, but suffered a pair of double bogeys on the last two holes. Chayanun is now in a tie for 26th with a score of 157.

Iowa State head coach Christie Martens was certainly pleased with the effort from her team.

“The team played great today and it was a lot of fun to watch,” Martens said. “There were so many birdies out there. They played loose and solid all day, and we have to take that mindset into the final round tomorrow.”

“Bow (Phuntumabamrung) was awesome today,” Martens added. “She is such a tough player and I am so happy for her right now.”

The final round will conclude tomorrow with 18 holes, beginning at 8 a.m.
