AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State Women’s golf team returns to the course this weekend at the Dick McGuire/Branch Law Firm Invitational. The Cyclones are coming off of a school-record-tying-fourth straight NCAA Regional appearance. Iowa State head coach Christie Martens has high expectations for this year’s team, as the Cyclones will look to clinch that record-breaking fifth regional appearance and advance onto the NCAA finals.

ISU returns four regulars in its lineup from a year ago, but they will have to compete without the services Punpaka Phuntumabamrung, who led the team in stroke average (74.4) and top-10 finishes (4) in 2012-13.

At the Big 12 Championship last April, the team finished third, the best placing at the Big 12 meet in school history. Phuntumabamrung was the runner-up medalist at the Big 12 Championship, recording the best finish for a Cyclone in Big 12 Championship history. The team was also ranked as high as 14th nationally last season, another school record.

The team will rely on four players from last year’s squad who competed in every tournament in seniors Sasikarn On-iam and Prima Thammaraks, junior Chonlada Chayanun, and sophomore Cajsa Persson.

On-iam, Thammaraks, Chayanun and Persson combined for five top-10 performances last season and repeatedly placed in the top-20 as individuals at each tournament. They all recorded stroke averages between 75.4 -75.8 in 28 rounds last season. Persson made the Big 12 All-Tournament team as a rookie. Consistency should not be an issue for the Cyclones this year.

The team is joined by a pair of freshman newcomers Pimrawee Huang and Carmen Vidau. Huang was one of the top golfers in Thailand. She finished third twice at the World Master Junior Golf in Nevada in 2011 and 2012. Vidau is also a top golfer in her home country of Spain. She finished second at the Campeonato Excmo Ayto de Llanes and participated in the Spanish Ladies Amateur.

It's an exciting time for Iowa State women’s golf. A brand new state-of-the-art performance facility will debut this season, offering the program one of the finest facilities of its kind nationally.
