TULSA, Okla. – The No. 23 Iowa State women’s golf team remained in 22nd place at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship after carding a 298 this afternoon at the Tulsa Country Club. The Cyclones are at 604 for the tournament.

The story of the day for the Cyclones was once again the outstanding play of Chonlada Chayanun. The junior carded the first-ever sub-70 round by a Cyclone in NCAA postseason tournament history with a 1-under 69.

Chayanun had birdies on 16, 18 and 3 with just two bogeys on her card to remain at +1 for the tournament. She was greenside in two on both par-5s and was able to get up-and-down for birdie on both holes. She currently finds herself in the top-10 in the 126-player field in a tie for 8th (141).

Iowa State head coach Christie Martens was thrilled with the play of Chayanun.

“She played awesome again today, which was exciting to see,” Martens said. “She stayed super confident and putted great. She’s playing great and it’s been so much fun to watch her. She’s been working so hard this season and it’s exciting to see it pay off.”

Chayanun credited her putting in helping her get into the top-10.

“The biggest thing for me today was my putting,” Chayanun said. “I made some bad chips, but I was able to save it by making pars and birdies from pretty far distances.”

With the winds a little calmer than the first round, the scores in the field vastly improved. Sasikarn On-iam fired a 5-over 75 today to put her at 156 and in a tie for 102nd.

Freshman Carmen Vidau posted a 77 after a first-round 76 to sit in a tie for 82nd at 153. Sophomore Cajsa Persson is in a tie for 97th at 155 after posting a second-round 78.

The craziest round of the day for the Cyclones belonged to senior Prima Thammaraks. Thammaraks opened up with a triple-bogey after her ball came to rest on a bridge. Two holes later she took a double-bogey when her ball went into the trees and never came down, resulting in a lost ball.

She began the round 8-over through the first five holes, but the senior made a major comeback, going 3-under on the next eight holes, including back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 and 3 and 4. She finished with a respectable 77 today to place her in a tie for 112th at 158.

“Prim really fought back hard,” Martens said. “Her card early on had a lot of circles, squares and everything in between. That was exciting to see her comeback and I hope it bodes well for her tomorrow.”

Iowa State will resume third round play tomorrow morning with tee time blocks from 7:30-8:14 a.m. CT.
